THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF ISTRIA IN PULA

The Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula possesses greater number of the artifacts of the Egyptian provenance. Vesna Girardi-Jurkić, Ph.D., and Kristina Džin, Prof., are currently in charge of the the Museum's collections. The artifacts can divided in three large groops.

The first group consists of fourteen monuments conected to the worship of Egyptian cults in the Helenistic and Roman periods. The artifacts of this group were found during many archaeological excavations in the area of Istria. The artifacts are connected to the worship of the Serapis, Isis, Isis-Fortuna, Juppiter-Amon, Hathor and Achelous cults. The collections contains following artifacts: an Isis-Fortuna statuette from Savudrija (lat. Silbonis; no inventory number), a Hathor-shaped capital of a column discovered in Pula (lat. Pola; inv. num. A 8712), three inscriptions with the theophoric names from ther area of Pula (a fragment of an inscription with the name of T. Annius Isiodorus - inv. num. A 4118, a fragment of a smaller altar with the name of Afflania Isias - inv. num. 439, an inscription with the cognomen of Isias - inv. num. 339), an altar dedicated to Isis-Panthea froma Galežani (lat. Ager Polensis; inv. num. A 41 - former num. 229), a monolith block of a part of an altar parapet with an image of a Juppiter-Amon head from the area of Pula (inv. num. A 391), a fragment of the upper part of a block of an altar parapet with an image of Juppiter-Amon head from the area of Pula (inv. num. A393), a monolith block of an altar parapet with an image of a Juppiter-Amon head from the area of Pula (no inventory number), a block of an altar parapet with an Juppiter-Amon image from the area of Pula (inv. num. A 18593), a part of a block of an altar parapet with an Juppiter-Amon image from the area of Pula (inv. num. 479), the upper part of a gable roof cornice with an Achelous image from Pula (inv. num. 125 - former num. 336), a fragment of a lime-stone slab with an image of a Achelous head (inv. num. 8724), and a tombstone with an image of a figure wearing kalathos on the head (probably Serapis; inv. num. 313).

The second group consists of seven bronze artifacts of mostly votive character. The collection contains following artifacts: a small amulet-shaped from Vizača (lat. Nesactium; inv. num. A 5048), a bronze Osiris statuette from Bala (lat. Valle; inv. num. A 5224 - former num. 3227), a bronze Apis statuette from an unknown site (inv. num. A 5224 - former num. 3236), a bronze amulet in form of a naked man with legs put together from the area of Istria (inv. num. A 5221), a statuette of the godess Neith from an unknown site (no inventory number), a bronze figurine of an Egyptian man walking (inv. num. A 5220), and a bronze statuette of an Egyptian pharao in kneeling position from the area of Istria (inv. num. A5210).

The last, third group consists of seventeen artifacts, mostly the Egyptian shuabtis and amulets that were part of the collection of an unknown Austrian donator. The collection contains following artifacts: a light green colored shabti (inv. num. P 7580), a fragment of a shabti figurine (inv. num. P 30331), a fragment of a light green colored shabti figurine (inv. num. P 30332), a fragment of a light blue colored shabti (inv. num. P 30333), a faded green colored amulet with a Bes image (inv. num. P 30334), a greenish gray colored Bes amulet (inv. num. P 30335), a ceramic amulet of the uadj temple column (inv. num. P 30336), a faded green colored uadj eye amulet (inv. num. P 30337), a greenish colored udjat eye amulet (inv. num. P 30338), a light green colored udjat eye amulet (inv. num. P 30339), a light brown colored udjat eye amulet (inv. num. P 30340), a grey brown colored udjat eye amulet (inv. num. P 30341), a brown colored udjat eye amulet (inv. num. P 30342), a ceramic lotus flower (inv. num. P 30343), a scarab made of bone (inv. num. P 30344), a wooden amulet of the uadj temple column (inv. num. P 30345), and the perls made of stone (inv. num. P 30346).

So far, the artifacts of the Archaological Museum in Pula were written about by Štefan Mlakar (1957, 1962), Bernarda Perc (1968), and Vesna Jurkić-Girardi (1972, 1976, 1978, 1981, 2001), Željko Ujčić (2001), Kristina Džin (2001), Igor Uranić (2001), and Mladen Tomorad (2003.).
