THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM IN SPLIT

The Archaeological Museum in Split stores many artifacts connected with the Egyptian cults, and found in the area of Mid-Dalmatia and its islands. The artifacts were acquired in the archaeological excavations, by purchasing and by donations of the private persons (for example, Lanza from Split, Marchi, Machiedo from Hvar, and Lukanović from Šibenik).

The collections contain following artifacts: a green enameled shabti from the site in Mid-Dalmatia (inv. num. G 1623), another green enameled shabti from the site in Mid-Dalmatia (inv. num. G 1624), a shabti made of the uncolored terra cotta (inv. num. B 212), a shabti made of the dark brown patinated terra cotta from the site in Mid-Dalmatia (inv. num. B 213), a shabti made of the dark greenish patinated limestone from the site in Mid-Dalmatia (inv. num. B 214), a shabti made of the greenish enameled clay from the island of Hvar (inv. num. G 1625), a shabti made of the dark granite from the site in Mid-Dalmatia (inv. num. B 215), a shabti made of faience from the site in Mid-Dalmatia (inv. num. G 1626), a shabti-like statuette made of the dark brown patinated terra cotta (inv. num. B 216), an eye-shaped amulet made of the green enameled clay from the island of Hvar (inv. num. The Archaeological Museum in Split and in Diocletian's palace in Split contains eleven sphinx or their parts brought by the Emperor Diocletian during the building of his palace. The Museum stores also an Egyptian head made of the reddish granite which was found in the northern part of the palace.

The artifacts were published several times from the second part of the 20th century up to the present day. They were published by F. Bulić (1879, 1885, 1886, 1887, 1888, 1896, 1903, 1908, 1909, 1910, 1927), W. Drexler (1900), B. Gabričević (1956), P. Selem (1961, 1963, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1997, 1999), B. Perc (1968), M.-Ch. Budischovsky (1977), N. Cambi (1993), J. Žanić-Protić (1988), and M. Tomorad (2000, 2003).
