THE BENKO HORVAT ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTION - THE MUSEUM FOR CONTEMPORARY ART IN ZAGREB

The Benko Horvat collection was donated to the city of Zagreb in 1946. It is stored in the Galeries of the city of Zagreb (today, the Museum for Contemporary Art), and in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb (the Numismatic collection). The entire inventory of the collection consists of more than 1000 artifacts. The archaeological collection contains 381 artifacts. The artifacts date from the 11th century BC to the 11th century A.D. Up to the present, the collection was written about by R. Koščević (2000), and M. Tomorad (2003).

The collection contains following artifacts of the Egyptian provenance: four gemmas, one terra cotta sculpture, one scaraboid, two Osiris statuettes, and three shabtis. On the gemmas, there are representations of Ceres or Isis (inv. num. 524; Sisak, 1st c. A.D.), Fortuna and Mercurius with an ibis feather (inv. num. 553; Rim, 2nd-3rd c. A.D.), the bust of a boy in right profile with a Horus's lock above his right ear (inv. num. 496; Stolac in Herzegovina), and two naked figurines (inv. num. 537; Milan, 3rd c. A.D.). The collections also contains a male terra cotta head with explicit Semitic features and the characteristics of the old Egyptian plastic art (inv. num. 377), and one pseudo-scarabaeus (scaraboid; inv. num. 581; Sisak). A special place in the collection is reserved for the old Egyptian plastic art comprising two Osiris figurines (inv. num. 364; Alexandria), and three shabtis (inv. num. 360; Alexandria).
